Membaris “Black Plasma Armour” 2025

Don your armor and set off into black metal’s mysterious unknown. Exiled from dystopia and into the realm of unreason we venture now under the sigil of future’s blight. Black metal of emptiness and of despair to track the journey. From within the fabled German black metal underground, Membaris have emerged; bearing endearments of the void - a catalyst to world downfall in their sixth LP, “Black Plasma Armour”, set for a January 21, 2025 release under the seal of WTC Productions. Withering away is any semblance of humankind’s capacity for a principled existence, only hysteria to see us off into a most dismal future…
With “Black Plasma Armour”, Membaris provides a most contemporary and industrial-edged experience. Not a throwback to second wave legend, but a vision of the future through the lens of disdain: somber yet aggressive, melodic yet dark as a starless night. And as tortured echoes cross over every blackened melodious passage, it’s to the sound of misery-drenched Mgła-heralded album cuts: “Threshold of a Dystopia” and “Sigil II (Star Ritual)” that tap into the lament of a thousand years and unleash dread of the most existentially rueful consort. Satanic revelry and medieval themes are a thing of the past here, as well are the tired and persistent musical stylings of the early ‘90’s. Just because it sounds like black metal, that doesn’t mean that it sounds like early ‘90’s black metal. I’ll sure be glad when reviewers start thinking outside that box and start giving innovative bands like Membaris more credit.
Furious and intricately melodic - “N.O.V.A.” - a blatant display of talent and unbridled songwriting ability. Memorable passages and masterful compositions that hit home without being overtly catchy; captivating and cyclical arrangements that ebb/flow to a martial rhythmic current as I’m reminded of “Unbound” era Sargeist or “The Wild Hunt” era Watain. Our dystopian experience culminates with “Onwards to the Last Brink of Reason”. Watching the world burn now to the swan song of indisputable, authoritative and rigid BM that alternates between soldierly and dreamlike parts; a blessed union of aggression and majesty.
This is dissolution, this is the end of it all and this is the faithless passing of the torch to the incapable. Fanning the flames of societal collapse and the degradation of humanity. Armored in blackened clad Damascus and prepared for the worst, Membaris are the ravens and we are the fallen - integrity and character littered upon a sacrificial battleground of degeneration’s curse. The end is nigh! The finality of traits that were once held dear: tradition, respect and dignity. A fallen world of little beauty and of no hope. You can sense the weight of our demise as it presses upon the shoulders of our brood as they unknowingly march into the gloom of a forthcoming Dark Age, and black metal is the harbinger. An album fit for our times is “Black Plasma Armour” and a proud collective is Membaris. Prepare to rue the dawn! Here’s to the death of what could’ve been…
