1 Review for 'Necromantia - Crossing the Fiery Path''Crossing the Fiery Path'
An Auspicious Start
In 1993 black metal was just coming in to it's own. And though all eyes were on Norway at the time, bands from around the world had started to follow in the footsteps of the Venom,Bathory,Celitic Frost inspired bands of northern Europe. Of particular note was Greece. Rotting Christ released 'The Mighty Contract' as well as several EP's and demos since the late 80's. Varathron unleashed 'His Majesty At The Swamp' and Necromantia debuted with 'Crossing The Fiery Path'. I chose this record to review because while it is in my opinion the weakest of the three, it still deserves recognition for it's overall influence on BM and it's enduring legacy. Necromantia managed to not only compete with the above mentioned bands but seperate themselves with a unique sound and aesthetic that would shine through on they're follow up album 'Scarlet Evil,Witching Black'. 'Crossing The Fiery Path' has a simple production that lets the music come through unhindered by too much studio magic. It's raw but melodic, agrressive but accessible and above all it demonstrates the talent of a band hungry to make they're mark. In 2022 Artefacts Records, owned and operated by Nergal of Behemoth, put out a lavish collection of early Necromantia demos called 'Blood Rituals'. About half the songs from this album are on it in demo form but it feels like a compilation. This album flows beautifully, each song moving seamleesly into the next. I highly recommend for BM fans of the early nineties sound.
