Mixing Atmospheric Black Metal with Americana is not a new thing, and you can even say that it's USA's biggest Metal export of the post-2000s! Among big names like Agalloch or Wolves in the Throne Room, I've always put Panopticon in a separate place in my heart!
His discography has been one of the most consistent in comparison to his peers. His unique way of mixing Folk music with Atmospheric Black Metal created one of the coldest and most ...

What can be said about Darkthrone that hasn't been said already? They were the Kings of Black Metal in the 90s, and made a huge impact on all of the future Black Metal bands to come. Their "A Blaze in the Northern Sky" album was one of the first (if not the first) proper Black Metal albums to come out of Norway.
It was trend-setting/innovative and old school at the same time. Yeah, Mayhem was the first band to use corpse paint and shit, but ...

Sinira is a one-man Melodic Black Metal band hailing from Texas. After releasing a decent demo, he started to tease us with some singles of this, his debut album. The single "Where Starlight Does Not Shine" was probably the best of the two (and one of the best Melodic Black Metal songs from the last 10-20 years!).
This song showcased a very strong sense of songwriting. It started with a very evil, old school tremolo-picked riff, then ...

Many people slam this band (or indeed any slightly Melodic band!) for sounding like the mighty Dissection, but I think that's like slamming someone because they look too much like George Clooney!
Although there have been tons of Melo-Death and Melo-Black bands since the glory days of the Swedish Melodic Black Metal attack of the 90s, most of them failed to catch the same magic. I think we finally have a contender for that throne!
Ok, ...

Insane album from a band I never get tired of. This guy is extremely talented, and this album shows it perfectly.
The strongest point of this album is the guitar riffs. They are insanely good and effective. They are often thrashy, and that's a point that I love, because the fact of putting other types of riff than just the tremolo one note picking make the album less repetitive and more entertaining. My biggest example on this album for this ...

What is it with one man armies in the past few years? Seriously, how can one guy make something that will blow everything that legends like Destruction or Venom put out? This band is arguably one of the best One Man Bands of all time. Although the latest full-length seems to be more straight and mediocre, on this album this guy knew WTF he was doing!
Let's get straight to the point; The riffs here are Bombastic, Barbaric,... (we can write ...

As one can guess from the sole member's name (Crying Orc), this band is another among the thousands of Old School melancholic, monotone Black Metal bands that worship Burzum, and the myriads of bands that tried to create that raw, melancholic sound in France!
Earlier efforts of this band were too primitive, and lacked some energy and memorable riffs. This, his second full-length, is much the same, but shows much more maturity and improvement ...

When I first started getting into extreme metal, I really admired Nicholas Barker from his work with Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir, and to this day I still think he's one of the greatest metal drummers out there, his work on the "Dusk and Her Embrace" album is mindblowing:
I think his ... |
