BLACK METAL NEWS & REVIEWS
Newsletter #36 - August 9th, 2021
Greetings,

If there's one thing that is a hallmark of the Black Metal scene, it's one-man bands. Whether it's the classic case of the productive bedroom musician pumping out a new atmospheric Black Metal album every month, or whether it's one of the biggest names in Black Metal such as Bathory, Burzum, Taake or Nargaroth, we all love one-man bands, don't we? This week we interviewed Chrysthian Chrisley from the "One Man Bands" YouTube channel, who has been dedicated to promoting one-man bands for almost four years now. Check out the interview below, and be sure to visit his channel when you have a moment to spare.

Also, over the last month we saw new album announcements from such veterans as Besatt, Sarke and Cradle of Filth, and new music videos from the likes of Enslaved, Wolves in the Throne Room and Mayhem. We also started to see some big names like Mayhem and Marduk reveal their plans to get back on the road, with several tours announced. Cautiously optimistic...

In other news, now that everyone and their dog prefers to use their mobile phone for everything, I've done some work on the site to make it easier to read and use from mobile devices. Thanks Generation Z, I hated every minute of it.

Here's this month's highlights, enjoy.

Regards,
Imperator

Baxaxaxa - Catacomb Cult (2021)

I wish it was less dOOm and more bOOm!

Review for Baxaxaxa - Catacomb Cult

88%

4.4 star rating

Baxaxaxa started out as an underground cult band in the early 90s which combined the doomy, old school Cult Metal and Black metal affairs of Hellhammer with some of the newly emerging melodic affairs of the time from Scandinavia. After releasing a demo in 1992 (which is a true underground classic BTW!) they simply ran to the hills and never looked back on this project! Until the year 2019, when they suddenly reemerged from nowhere with a brand ...

Review for Akitsa - Sang Nordique

Akitsa is for me, clearly the greatest Raw Black Metal band from Québec, and mostly because of this masterpiece. This album has an extremely raw and crushing sound that is unique to this album. There are no weak moments, none at all, Québec Black Metal at its best! Like always, let's start with the good points.

This masterpiece has a lot of good points, the biggest are clearly, again, the extremely raw and crushing guitar riffs and sound, but ...

Sounds more 80s than the actual 80s bands!

Review for Devil Master - Satan Spits on Children of Light

90%

4.5 star rating

As I mentioned before, recently there has been a growing wave of American musicians who go for the old school tongue-in-cheek vibe with Black Metal. As we know, this trend started with the legendary Venom (and so far, no one did it with the same impact!). This band mixes the old school sound of Venom and other less occult-driven NWOBHM bands with the crossover punk bands of the 80s. After releasing an excellent demo and an even more excellent ...

Apocalyptic Raids 2.0

Review for Death Strike - Fuckin' Death LP

90%

4.5 star rating

Many people take Death Strike as a Death Metal band, but it's simply just not accurate! (I mean, it's 1985 man! What do you expect?!). Even though the riffs have lots in common with the late 80s Death Metal bands, factors like the incredible vocals easily put this on the Old School " Hellhammer worshippers" category! They almost sound as if a mad serial killer sang them! They are also stenched in reverb which makes it even more obscure. In ...

Review for Warmoon Lord - Battlespells

As I have mentioned many times before, I've always had a soft spot for Finnish Black Metal. Whether legendary acts such as Horna, Satanic Warmaster, Goatmoon, Sargeist, or lesser known projects such as Noenum... they have a certain quality to their music that is immediately identifiable. It's easier to describe the music of other countries such as Norway (which almost always sounds cold!), but the overall emotion on Finnish Black Metal acts is a ...

Review for DSS - Criminal Witchcraft

4.5 star rating

Recently, as a result of a recommendation, I came across a compilation album called "New Jersey Metal Attack Vol. 1" which was a split between some unknown bands from NJ. Although I liked the overall album, one of the songs there really caught my attention. That song was "Deep Space Sorcerer" by DSS. I hadn't encounterd this level of Old School-ness in a long way. It sounded like a Punk-y version of Motorhead with some satanic spotting! (Sound ...

Review for Repugnant - Epitome of Darkness

Even though the nature of Swedish Death Metal of the 90s is quite debatable (most famously, the Norwegian Black Metal scene started as a protest against it!), I still beleive that it's a very misunderstood scene and people shouldn't avoid it. The big names like Dismember, Entombed, Carnage,... released some legendary classic Death Metal albums in the late 80s early 90s, and the number of great underground Swedish Death Metal albums are beyond ...

The best album of 2021 so far in my opinion. Like always, Spectral Wound give us some insane music. Let's start with the good points.

Firstly, the riffs of this album are really good. A great example is the song ''Frigid and Spellbound'', the best song of this album in my opinion, along with ''Mausoleal Drift''. They are pretty original, and not repetitive. Every song is very different, and that's a point that I like (and that I also don't ...
