BLACK METAL NEWS & REVIEWS
Newsletter #45 - August 26th, 2022
Greetings,

Any Thrash enthusiasts will be glad to hear a brand new Sodom album is in the works, celebrating the band's 40th anniversary, although the material within is not strictly brand new per se - the new album will feature 17 re-recorded tracks from over the course of their entire discography, one carefully selected from each album. As for actual new material, they also dropped a new single, titled "1982", with an accompanying lyric video, so check that out (I hate lyric videos).

Also, Nargaroth have just signed to Season of Mist, one of the biggest labels in Black Metal, and Ash revealed that a new as-yet untitled album is currently in the recording phase, an album which I personally have high hopes for.

In other news, sadly, earlier this month Stuart Anstis, who was guitar player for Cradle of Filth in their mid-90s golden age, passed away at the age of 48. I know for a fact it's been a long time since you last listened to any early CoF albums, so do yourself a favour and give "Dusk and Her Embrace" a spin, all of the fantastic guitarwork on that album was recorded by Stuart. Rest in peace.

Here's the rest of the news highlights, enjoy.

Regards,
Imperator

Despite the fact that the Belarusian Black Metal scene is really underground, they still have some pretty good bands, and Balrog is one of them. Balrog is not a band that I would listen to everyday, firstly because the band only released one demo and one album, but also because this is not a band to listen to often, I don't know why, I become bored pretty quickly if I listen to this band often, even if I really like this album, but one or two ...

Hail the Black Legions!

Most tribute albums are mediocre at best. The biggest problem with tribute / cover albums is that they perform songs from the favourite bands from their youth (that you've probably heard before), and by doing that, they ruin the magic of the original song, even if they perform it in a better way.

However, this tribute album is somehow different, since these guys are actually paying tribute to their peers! Almost all of the French underground ...

Review for Burzum - Aske

I'm gonna go straight to the point: This EP is Fantastic!

People mostly remember this for its album cover and the controversies surrounding it, but boy oh boy, they should pay more attention to the music.

The first song is a fantastic mid-pace opener. It's one of the first examples of what later became Pagan Black Metal / NSBM. But guys, let's not beat around the bush here, THE VOCALS! Damn, those vocals. Some people may point out that the ...

Bathory is a band that no one needs to explain anything about! (Quorthon didn't find the need to explain it, so why should we?). It's magic. Black Metal wouldn't have been like it is if it wasn't for this band. Quorthon's legacy is an incredible one.

This album is the bridge between the old school Bathory and the latter day Bathory. Quorthon started to move away from the primitive, satanic lyrics and imagery, and started to become more ...

Isengard is one of the most underrated little projects in the Norwegian scene. It's interesting, mostly because it's so goddamn different than anything else in that scene. The band's early output shows a very young Fenriz who was obsessed with Death Metal and the traditional Doom Metal bands of the 80s. Later down the road, the band started to develop into the great Pagan Black Metal band that we know and love.

This album is a compilation of ...

Let's just say this, gang. This album missed being the best Darkthrone album (or even the best Black metal album) because of a very simple detail: THE VOCALS!

Argh! As much as I love Ted and his voice on most albums, I can't really fathom why he chose a Barbaric vocal style for this album. The vocal styles that he did on the previous albums were superb, but what happened here? Was it because of the producer, or mixer? I don't know, but ...
