True Norwegian Black Metal

Review for Borknagar - The Olden Domain

95%

4.8 star rating

I've been listening to many old school albums lately. Metal in all forms is so ubiquitous now that it's easy for older albums and bands to get passed over. Even if they still exist and still release albums. The vinyl resurgence of the last decade has made many great albums available again, most on larger labels with worldwide distribution that make them easier to get in the States, which is great for yours truly because so many were released on ...

Review for Cult of Fire - Moksha

Moksha is the fourth full length from Prague's Cult Of Fire. Released in 2020 the album flew under the radar thanks to Covid and the ensuing world wide shit show that followed. But thankfully Cult Of Fire had a well deserved reputation in black metal circles. True craftsman of the genre each of their albums maintain a high quality without being boring or repetitive. Don't let the funky cover art fool you, Moksha is killer from start to finish. As ...

Overshadowed by the brilliance of Voice of Steel.

Review for Nokturnal Mortum - Істина

91%

4.6 star rating

Nokturnal Mortum's discography has so many different colors and ups-and-downs that people can't keep up with it and start to criticize a lot! The best example for this is the transition from "Voice of Steel" (which, by the way, is the best album from Ukraine in my opinion) to this album.

When I saw the fantastic artwork done by Necrolord, I expected it to be even better than "Voice of Steel"! But it's not. Though, I can't find it all that ...

Review for Oranssi Pazuzu - Mestarin Kynsi

90%

4.5 star rating

Oranssi Pazuzu's psychedelic, nightmarish soundscape is one of the most impressive efforts in Avant-garde Black Metal history. Their early works were very much the best examples of what is known as Psychedelic / Acid Black Metal, however; on the last two albums they seem to be shifting more towards the psychedelic parts, and the whole sound of the album starts to move away from Black Metal. This said, this album is still far from bland and ...

RAW Black/Thrash!

Review for Kommodus - Kommodus

94%

4.7 star rating

The self-titled Kommodus album is a different animal compared to the previous demos released. The riffs are much more thrashy and catchy, and the production is much more crisp (well, crisp for Raw Black Metal!), but there is some stuff that is unaltered, this band still avoids the chaotic Black Metal drumming and riffing.

The lyrical themes of this album are for the most part related to the Roman Empire and its mythology.

This probably means something to math majors!

Review for Imperial Triumphant - Vile Luxury

76%

3.8 star rating

Imperial Triumphant is one of the most extreme bands when it comes to experimentation and weird songwriting. Their first two albums were extremely obscure and weird, but on this release, it seems that they invented a new sound.

I'm not gonna beat around the bush here, this album is probably technically very impressive, but it just doesn't work. The jazzy improvisations sound like shit! And I'm not being obtuse here, I love good experimental ...

Many people would believe that the Norwegian Black Metal scene died in the 90s, and that post-2000s Black Metal from Norway should be avoided at all costs! (I can agree with that for the most part!) But some bands like Djevel managed to break free from that curse.

The early outputs by this band were mostly copies of old school Taake, Kvist and Carpathian Forest. All this said, they were very great copies, but for the last few years this band is ...

I am interesting in creating a one man band like Xasthur/Burzum etc. I can make the riffs and the drums but i dont know if my vocals fit in black metal as a genre. What do you think? I tried singing an old Mayhem song in my own style.
