Atmospheric Americana Metal!

Review for Wayfarer - Children of the Iron Age

86%

4.3 star rating

Fact: There are more American Black Metal bands than in the Scandinavian countries combined!

But out of all these countless bands, there has never been a proper distinguishable movement from the land of the free! Although they have had some excellent, influential acts since the 80s, for me, America's biggest contribution to the world of Black Metal has been the rather excellent Atmospheric Black Metal scene that started back in the 2000s. Surprisingly Unique!

Review for Varde - Asgaardsreien

89%

4.5 star rating

Varde is sort of a Black Metal mini-supergroup, formed in 2017 (well, two of the three members were session musicians for some well-known bands, such as Tvangeste and Dødheimsgard).

Alright, the mini-supergroup was an unfunny joke by me, but what I'm trying to say is that these guys had some musical background with some excellent bands, and this EP is a kind of proof of this involvement. On the first look I thought "Oh well, here we go! Yet ...

Raw, Ugly and Primitive.

Review for Obskuritatem - Hronika iz Mraka

87%

4.4 star rating

You don't need a PhD to understand the music of Obskuritatem on any of their releases. It's very primitive, very raw, very ugly, with a huge amount of feelings attached to it. Their previous albums were all interesting, but the compositions on those demos and the first full-length felt disjointed and incomplete to be honest. On this release, however, they finally conquered the art of songwriting and composition!

The minimalistic intro, ...

How to headbang in an old school fashion, Chapter One:

Review for Cruel Force - The Rise of Satanic Might

89%

4.5 star rating

When you first start to listen to this album, and you hear that Venom-like chant on the first track, you immediately realize that this was made by people who were obsessed with Old School Black Metal acts (well, you might get that just by looking at the artwork, but anyway, who am I to judge!). The initial starter riff for the first song is just pure Tormentor worship. There are lots of moments like this, where it reminds the listener of bands ...

Old School Occultism and Black Mass Rituals Done Well.

Review for Mortuary Drape - Spiritual Independence

89%

4.5 star rating

After the somewhat weird and controversial sound on their previous album, "Buried in Time", Mortuary Drape decided to ditch the experimental metalcore-y bullshit and return to their roots. The result is a very interesting album, with a lot of the old school elements that made them great on releases such as "All the Witches Dance" and "Tolling 13 Knell".

The riffs are incredibly Thrashy and catchy from beginning to end, and the overall guita ...

They didn't disappoint!

Review for Yoth Iria - As the Flame Withers

90%

4.5 star rating

As I mentioned on my review for the EP that came before this release, the Greek sound has always been a very unique scene compared to the other scenes. I was very excited about the collaboration of two old guards which were a part of legendary acts such as Rotting Christ / Necromantia / Varathron. The EP was hugely appealing, and very exciting, but it wasn't enough, so finally I had the chance to listen to the full-length that I was looking ...

Nihilistic Perfection!

Review for Human Serpent - Inhumane Minimalism

"Inhumane Minimalism" is the second album in Human Serpent's extremely consistent discography. Out of the four albums released to date, this is their best by far, their Magnum Opus! On this release they perfected the already fantastic atmosphere by making the production even better (almost perfect!).

The lyrical themes here (and on almost all Human Serpent releases) are Nihilisim, Misanthropy and hate towards religion. There are a lot of ...
