Newsletter #62 - August 9th, 2024
Greetings,

Some of you may have noticed that for the last week or so of July, the website was offline. I received a few messages and e-mails inquiring whether this was permanent, but worry not, for as you can see, we are back.

The downtime was caused by an unexpected issue with the hosting provider, which unfortunately did not allow me to give any advanced warning. Either way, this has now been fully resolved. Many thanks to all those who contacted me regarding the issue, and special thanks to those who have contributed to support the site during and after the downtime.

So, without further ado, I'll leave you to catch up on recent news and album reviews.

Cheers,
Imperator

An Auspicious Start

Review for Necromantia - Crossing the Fiery Path

In 1993 black metal was just coming in to it's own. And though all eyes were on Norway at the time, bands from around the world had started to follow in the footsteps of the Venom,Bathory,Celitic Frost inspired bands of northern Europe. Of particular note was Greece. Rotting Christ released 'The Mighty Contract' as well as several EP's and demos since the late 80's. Varathron unleashed 'His Majesty At The Swamp' and Necromantia debuted with ...

It's been seven years since this album was released. Listening to it now I'm reminded of just how good USBM can be. 'Obsidian Arc' is a fantastic work of dark atmosphere, outstanding riffs, top notch rhythm section, and excellent lyrics and singing. Opening track 'By The Light Of The Black Sun' is a perfect blend of aggression and atmosphere. The guitar work in the song is outstanding as well as the drumming. “Panzer Division Marduk” - probably the most infamous war-themed BM record ever created. Doesn't reinvent the wheel, but tries to perfect the existing wheel!

Review for Sorcier des Glaces - Un Monde de Glace et de Sang

I was a huge fan of "Moonrise in Total Darkness", and some songs on the first album (like "L'Éternelle Majesté des Montagnes" and "Onward into the Crystal Snows"). They somehow captured the essence of the fast, cold soundscape of the Swedish and of course 90s Norwegian acts. However, after that album, I started to lose interest in the band. Somehow, the magic and the epicness was gone, and the band started to sound like a Monarque copy! (probably ...

Extremely good album from an extremely good band from Ukraine. The atmosphere on this album is awesome, walking in the woods while listening to this is an insane sensation that really makes one feel good. Also, the riffs on this album are very good, a big part of the magic ambiance, and the vocals come to make the icing on the sundae.

Awesome job by talented musicians on this album, my personal favorite by them. I recommend this to you if you ...

Although Noenum hasn't released many albums (in fact, they have only released this EP!), they have captured the melancholy of early Burzum in a majestic way.

Fans of Burzum (especially the first four albums) know that Burzum's music is the border between classic Black Metal and depressive Black Metal that developed in the mid to late 90s. This EP's feeling is very much the same.

The riffs are incredibly cold and melancholic. Add to that the ...

Malokarpatan are arguably the best example of the Eastern-European "obscure music" revival that's been happening in the past few years. It's not that difficult to realize that these guys were obsessed with legendary 80s, 90s acts from that other eastern block country next to them called simply Czechia! (most notably Root and Master's Hammer)

Re-recorded albums are very difficult to like, because most of them ruin the magic and the feeling we get from our first encounter with their original versions. This album is no different, although the production is much better, and you can hear everything a bit better... but somehow we prefer the ugly, rough originals.

This said, some of the songs have actually become much better than their originals (even in feeling). For example, "Feeble ...
