A new very dark Paysage

Paysage d'hiver is one of the band that you can't avoid if you are an atmospheric black metal fan. A very consistent band that I've rediscovered this years as this new album, "Die Berge", came out.

This is album is exactly what I was expecting from Wintherr. Dark, cold, and absolutely fucking great. I believe that the main point behind the greatness of this album are the riffs. Directly from the start, you have some stunning atmospheric riffs that are bringing you in the typical Paysage d'hiver coldness. Some are, especially in the song "Urgrund", very violent for some atmospheric black metal. You can hear the it is the same guy who runs Darkspace in the riffs.

Another point that I love is the vocals. The are, like always with this guy, very great. His technique is awesome and matches perfectly with the dark and cold atmosphere of the album. A good example of that is the second song, "Verinnerlichung". The vocals are particularly good on this song.

The atmosphere is a very important point of the band. If I had to describe physically how it feels to listen to Paysage d'hiver, I would say it is like walking at night without light in the woods during a could night of February with your face freezing because of the cold wind of snow. That's what makes this album and this band at large so good.

Also, some really nice nature sound are added through the album, and it puts you in the atmosphere even deeper. Some of them are very similar to the ones on "Gebrechlichkeit I" by Burzum, which I find pretty cool. There's also the little synthesizer part on "Transzendenz I" that I really like.

The only problem I see with this albumin is the repetitiveness. I know it's an atmospheric black metal album and that it is at some point the thing that makes the genre nice is the repetitiveness, but this is a bit to much. 1h42 is very long for an album, and I personally think that when you make an album that long it is difficult to fall into this problem. I had the same feeling with the album "Im Wald". That is why I prefer Darkspace by the same guy. Darkspace is not as often repetitive as this band.

So, to conclude, this album is really great, but just a bit repetitive. It is to me in the top 5 album of 2024, and I really recommend it to any atmospheric BM fan.
