Sweden's on a roll

By 1996 black metal had taken over in Scandanavia. Norway's influence on bands sound was spreading fast. Swedish bands like Marduk, Sacramentum, Vinterland, and of course Dissection were carving out their own sound. More melodic, better production, and honestly more talented musicians made Swedish black metal of the mid nineties something special. Not having the baggage of church burnings and other assorted crimes helped as well. I'm not the first to say Euronymous' was more of a hinderance to Norway's scene with his strict parameters of what black metal should and the lifestyle's of those making it. But I digress...

Setherial weren't as talked about as the above bands but their debut album "Nord" is an absolute classic. All the trademarks of a great black metal are here. From furious blast beats to mid paced melody with folk instruments, double bass rhythm, and demonic vocals all flowing seamlessly into each other. The arrangements and composition by Mysteriis is excellent throughout. Kraath's lyrics are interesting without being cheesy. I'm glad I have translation software as only the Swedish lyrics were provided. Each track is great and I recommend listening to the album as a whole. "Nord" deserves that. In fact Setherial have six full lengths but never did recapture the fire of their debut. I'm assuming most people on this site have heard this album but if not get to it. And if so take it for another spin! Hails!
