Great effort by a band who keeps impressing

Spectral Wound is a rising band from the Québec who keeps impressing me and I would say a large part of the black metal scene too since their debut in 2015. They are slowly but definitely becoming one of the most important black metal band of the newest era, and this album shows why.

I would say that the melodies of this band and their capacity do bring a certain groove to their black metal is what makes them that good. The riffs are insane from the beginning to the end of the album. They bring a kind of dark spiritual atmosphere that I love. I would say that the band sound like their name. It do sound like a scary apparition of a dead person, and hurts you. I know this is not exactly the translation of the band name, but that's how I feel about it.

Secondly, I love the vocal of Jonah. They perfectly match with the sound and the type of black metal that the band is producing. They actually sound very spectral too, and I love it. He is to me one of the best black metal vocalist from the Québec.

Now, I have to talk about a song in particular. "Aristocratic Suicidal Black Metal". What a fucking banger this is. The riffs and the melodies are more than insane and the vocals are again perfectly matching it. And I do not often talk about this aspect, but the lyrics are absolutely fucking amazing. I also really love the name of the song. Honestly, I could put this song in repeat for a complete hour. The best black metal song of 2024, no doubt about that IMO.

But, I actually need to talk about another song for a particular reason. This song is "The Horn Marauding". I have to talk about it, because at 2:58 of it, there is a riff that sound extremely similar to a Satanic Warmaster song, "Bafomet", and I really don't like that. Why? Because I felt the same exact way about their song "Frigid and Spellbound" from their previous album called "A Diabolic Thirst". In that song from their previous album, the main riff sound extremely similar at the point to almost be the same exact riff as one the riff on the song "Satanic Black Devotion" by Sargeist.

So I am starting to ask myself if they took these riffs to make song with them and just change 1-2 notes so it can't be call exactly the same riff. When I heard "Frigid and Spellbound" for the first time, I told myself that it might be an accident. But twice? It's start to get weird, and I really ask myself if it was intentional or not.

Of course, there is billions of song, and it happens. For example, you can find the same exact notes and progression in "In a Bloody Night of Fullmoon" by Moonblood, "Det som en gang var" by Burzum and "Moskau" by Rammstein. If we look at who firstly released their song between the 3, it is Burzum. I don't think Rammstein copied Burzum, so it is probably an accident in this case. But it is weird that Spectral Wound as 2 songs with riffs that sound similar to 2 song by 2 pretty famous and both Finnish black metal band.

But other than that, it is an absolutely stunning album without any weak song or moment and I believe it is one of the best album of 2024. For the strange resemblance between some of their songs with other songs, let's give them the benefit of the doubt. It might be an accident. I just hope for them that it won't happen again, otherwise I will probably start to believe it is intentional.
