Iceland: The New Norway

The early nineties saw Norway gain worldwide notoriety for black metal music (among other things). Being credited for starting the second wave of extreme dark music. It quickly spread across Scandanavia and Europe. Despite all the great albums to come out during that era it couldn't last forever. Cut to thirty years later and Iceland has become a world leader in black metal. With bands like Solstafir, Misthyrming, Svartidaudi, Arstidir Lifsins, Dynfari, Sinmara, and Fortid to name a few, Iceland has dominated the last decade and a half. It may seem like an over statement but I sincerely believe that since 2005 only Germany, Canada and the U.S. can compete.
Though Ulfud are a new band, Of Existential Distortion being their debut album, they have arrived fully formed. Album opener Where Strange Light Dances starts the party off right with wall of sound guitar, blast beats and killer vocals by Breki Danielsen Imsland. The drumming is also a highlight. Sigurdur Jakobsson crushes blast beats and double kick with skill. Twin guitar attack of course gives each song plenty of rhythm and awesome riffs. Listen to Faceless! Album closer Leviathan Dreams is also great.
This album sounds like many of the bands mentioned above. That's not to say it's contrived at all. Each band has their own style and Ulfud are no exception. What I mean is that there is a particular sound that comes from Icelandic bands. I don't know if it's the production or studio's where they record but it reminds me of Sunlight in Sweden or Grieghallen in Norway. And we all know how many great bands and albums those studios produced.
