Verwoed - “The Mother” 2024
Verwoed
“The Mother”
Origin: Utrecht, Utrecht, Netherlands
Genre: Black Metal
Label: Wolves of Hades / Argento
Verwoed - The Netherland’s own modern-day underground black metal visionaries - casting a dim light from within the shadows of despair for only those desperate enough to see it. And to follow its faded luminance means to traverse the most dreadful genre terrain. A less-than-beaten cathartic pathway through terror-ridden neural pathways that twist and turn throughout the brain; catalytic to only sheer horror. Joy? An illusion. Contentment? Only for the naive, for this is black metal of the most shockingly visceral consort. On March 29, Verwoed released their third LP, “The Mother” via Wolves of Hades / Argento.
A maddening concoction of soundscapes fit for the insane is “The Mother”. Existential dread incarnate - a volume realized in the throes of trepidation - somberness only the beginning. Prepare for a total and complete immersion into this warm bath of misery as tracks like the titular cut and “The Child” play out like soundtracks to ultimate suffering: tedious passages, melancholic melodies and dismal rhythms to drop the heart and twist your innards into knots of fear. Vocals? A primal incursion of unfiltered animalistic rage. Maniacal bellows and bloodcurdling screams - catharsis unleashed - the darkest chasms of the psyche fearlessly explored here, and hope? A fool’s wish… There are brief moments of beauty to behold: scarce melodic leads, aquatic effects and riffs that scale heights through only overcast skies that threaten heavy rains of perdition. “Death In a Rosary” caps off the experience in deep contemplative, almost meditative fashion. Chant-like soliloquies set to tortuously dragging soundscapes that evoke the deepest sorrow imaginable.
Definitely for those in search of a total mind-fuck. Not much in the way of what could be considered palatable or pleasing to the ear. Acoustics and gentle lulls create a tranquil vibe throughout some parts of the recording, but always transitioning back into its foundational soul-raping manifestations. Not for the faint of heart nor the intestinally infirm. A dark voyage through the furthest stretches of pain unimaginable.
This is sonic art! Not your typical Satanic or Heathen black metal album, no homages to nature and definitely not something that will inspire you to go for a walk through the forest and freeze to death… Contemporary and cutting edge through and through. With “The Mother”, Verwoed stretch the fabric of the genre over nightmarish territories and deal out the suspense in spades. Not a record that even whispers for repeated spins: taxing of both the mind and spirit, but a respectable piece of dark art nonetheless. Are you prepared? Gird your loins for pure psychological horror! “The Mother” has arrived and she’s brought Hell with her… Bon voyage…
