A concept album can be tricky. A black metal band doing a concept album about the American west could easily suck. Unless that band is Wayfarer. Hailing from Colorado, this USBM act has delivered one great album after another since their 2014 debut 'Children Of The Iron Age'. They have always incorporated themes of the old west in their music. Which lends itself perfectly to black metal. Violence, greed, lawlessness, Godlessness, and suffering. Most American's grew up on westerns that depict savage Indians, gunslinger's, heroes, and villains. The great cattleman and robber barons staking their claim to the American dream no matter what the cost to others or the environment. People seeking riches of gold, oil, shipping, and whatever else could make profit. Wayfarer make damn sure that everyone knows the cost of such selfish acts. The blood spilled, the lives destroyed and the devastation of the aftermath which is still felt today by so many. Every one of their albums deals with this reality, especially the last three. But despite 'Worlds Blood' and 'A Romance With Violence' being excellent albums 'American Gothic' pulls the best elements of both into Wayfarer's most cohesive and polished work. There is no need to break down each song here. They're all outstanding. The lyrics, musicianship, arrangement, and production all first rate. I'm sure this will top many year end lists for 2023. Black Metal Americana at it's best!
